The Cypriot League- KOPA was formed in 1975. Previous to that several Cypriot teams were playing in various leagues throughout London. One such Club was KLN-Cypriot Youth- which was established in 1953. At its peak, KOPA boasted some 30 (senior) teams in 3 Divisions. Through economic problems many teams folded reducing the league dramatically. Around five seasons ago, two Divisions remained with only 16 teams participating. Due to the KOPA’s Management Committee’s endeavours in the past 2 seasons, the league has grown to 24 teams and rising! We can boast that every Cypriot household in London, some 300,000, have some connection with KOPA, be it with players or Club officials. Also, outside the Capital, teams from places like Nottingham and Birmingham have expressed more than an interest in joining our League.
KOPA are proud of the fact that non-Cypriots are involved in our league! Ultimately our aim is to play Football. Through that we hope we and our youth can flourish with understanding and tolerance of others. Without that we wouldn’t be able to go forward, without that our community wouldn’t be able to flourish, and without that our ideals and reasons behind the set up of our league would have been wasted. And Cypriots don’t waste opportunities!
