Dynamo Athletic Football Club can directly trace its inception back to the first generation Cypriot immigrants who wanted to preserve their heritage and language.

Back in the Sixties, Cypriot parents had a desire that their children learn their language in order that they could communicate with their families in Cyprus and also to ensure continuation of their values and traditions. For this reason Greek schools were set up where we would go once a week.

Following on from this in the early Seventies a weekly youth club was set up at Queenswell school in Whetstone where Greek dancing was taught and variety of games were played. It was an opportunity for the next generation to socialise together.

Queenswell School had two soccer pitches and not surprisingly the boys would get together for a kick about. From there the idea was hatched to do something more formal and set up a football team.

Initially, the players comprised cousins and friends but being all aged around fourteen and fifteen without the contacts or knowledge how to move forward, we were in effect a team having regular training sessions and the occasional friendly as we did not know how or where to join a league.

The youth club’s move to the Rendezvous Club in Friern Barnet and the injection of new younger blood in the names of Julie & Laki Chrysostomou Andrew Georgiou gave the team its much needed impetus and moved it from a group of friends to the start of a more professional set up. At that point, the team took the name of Dynamo AFC and we first joined The North London Football Combination where we were runners up for three years to Southgate White Hart. Every season those games were a David against Goliath battle as we were kids in our late teens compared to men in their twenties. From there it was into the Cypriot league and the rest is history.

We are proud to say that Dynamo’s tradition is built on camaraderie and friendship and this was highlighted by the success of our 30th Anniversary celebrations which were held in the summer of 2007.
